viaLanguage Management Team
Chanin Ballance, President & CEO Ms. Ballance was named Chief Executive Officer of viaLanguage in August of 2003. She co-founded viaLanguage in 2000 and served as viaLanguage's Chief Operating Officer and head of marketing where she raised initial capital, built the channel sales program and formed strategic partnerships. Previous to viaLanguage, Ms. Ballance co-founded The Language Company, a language and cross-cultural training school and translation service, where she was responsible for general management and finance and successfully selling the school to Berlitz. She also held positions at Portland General Electric where she was responsible for forecasting, scheduling and marketing of power. Ms. Ballance earned a bachelor of science degree in social science from Marylhurst College and a bachelor of science in Chemistry from Portland State University. Additionally, she's completed executive coursework at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business and has studied five foreign languages.
Mr. Herber has over 22 years of progressively responsible sales and business development experience in software and electronics, focusing on enterprise applications and the healthcare vertical market. Prior to joining viaLanguage, Mr. Herber was Regional Vice President of sales for Kronos’ Talent Management division, where he lead his teams to record increases in sales. His previous experience includes Vice President of Sales, Director of Business Development, Field Marketing, Sales Training and Human Resource Management with companies such as Eastman Kodak, Sequent Computers and IBM. He has lived and worked in Germany, France, the UK and much of Asia. Mr. Herber holds a BA in Marketing and a BA in Management from the University of Portland, and has completed the Marketing Strategies for High Technology Companies at Stanford University, as well as the I.L.E.E Spanish course for foreigners, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is also conversational in German.
Mr. Paulin has over 20 years of experience building and managing sales and marketing efforts in a wide range of technology and services companies. He joins viaLanguage from Safetec Software, where he was the vice-president of marketing for this leading provider of chemical management and compliance solutions. Paulin has extensive international marketing experience, having managed worldwide marketing at OrCAD (a global electronic design automation software company), was director of eBusiness strategy at Cadence Design Systems (global chip and circuitboard design software company), was vice-president of marketing at compliance software vendor Compli, and has held various sales and marketing management positions at CommercePath, Unisys, and NCR. Paulin holds a Masters Degree in International Management from Portland State University and a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from the University of Oregon.
Mr. Lewis has more than 20 years of management experience in operations, international marketing, business development, high-tech product planning and software development. He has an extensive international business background and has participated in many start-ups and mergers. Previously, he was regional operations manager for Citysearch.com (a web site development company and online city guide), general manager of ELP (a localization/translation vendor), international marketing manager for Agfa Europe (professional publishing systems), and director of CAS-EGD (an Australian database publishing service bureau). Mr. Lewis earned his bachelor’s degree in math/computer science from Northwestern University. In addition, he completed three years of MBA/technology management studies at the NSW Institute of Technology in Sydney, Australia. He speaks French and worked as a Serbo-Croatian-to-English translator for the U.S. government.
Mr. Waiblinger has over 20 years of experience in international sales, intercultural education and translation/localization. He currently runs viaLanguage's European sales division. Prior to co-founding viaLanguage, Mr. Waiblinger successfully spearheaded the development of The Language Company in 1995, a provider of linguistic services in the U.S. and abroad. Previously, he founded and managed the World Trade Center School of Languages and the Portland School of Languages. Since moving to the U.S. from Germany in 1981, he has been a member of many international business associations and has spoken frequently on international issues at local schools and cultural organizations. Mr. Waiblinger, a native of Stuttgart, Germany, is comfortable in several languages and has a business degree from the Stuttgart Business School.
Mr. Megarry has seven years sales and management experience in the software and electronics components markets with five years experience in channel sales. Prior to joining viaLanguage he managed channel sales for PowerQuest Corp. in the UK, Ireland and South Africa selling Storage Resource Management software, image-based enterprise-wide desktop roll-out solutions and consumer based partitioning, imaging and back-up software. He was responsible for distribution accounts in the UK and Ireland and later managed internal direct sales at MuRata Electronics (UK), selling passive electronic components to national and multi-national companies including Nokia, APC and Panasonic. A native of Winchester, England, he holds a Bachelor degree in History from Southampton University.
